Happy Birthwear Founder Sarah Livingstone

Happy Birthwear is founded and designed by Sarah Livingstone. Sarah married her skills as a professional fashion designer and doula to create apparel that provides functionality, support, comfort and style during labor and birth. While assisting in births as a doula, Sarah witnessed her clients were not getting their needs met with the traditional hospital gown, which was poorly designed for labor and birth. She believed women deserved better on this important day of their lives and created a new category of apparel, birthwear, to solve this problem. After many prototypes and testing, Happy Birthwear came to life.

Sarah is an accomplished fashion designer and has worked at such fashion houses as BCBG Max Azria and Bebe in Los Angeles. She graduated with honors from the prestigious design school FIDM, in Los Angeles. Sarah's favorite design job was as an adjunct professor at the Art Institute of Portland, teaching apparel design and fashion marketing classes. While completing her undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon, she became a doula at the Oregon School of Midwifery. After her undergraduate graduation, Sarah received a scholarship to work at a midwifery clinic in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where she assisted in many births. This became helpful experience, for upon her return to the U.S., she unexpectedly and successfully delivered her niece in the backseat of a car on the way to the hospital.

Twice, Sarah personally enjoyed the comfort and ease of Happy Birthwear during the labor and births of her daughters. She currently lives in beautiful Portland, Oregon with her husband and two daughters and enjoys all things involving design, birth, Spirit, music and nature.
